BPMS WATCH Column

BPMS Watch - BPM and Its Enemies

My very first BPMS Watch column, over three years ago, was titled “Without a BPMS, It’s Not Really BPM.” And to a large degree I still believe that, although today I would probably tone it down to...

Traditionally, process modeling has relied on proprietary tools and methodologies, raising the cost and limiting shared understanding.  Today we have a powerful new process modeling standard, the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) from OMG, and an ever-increasing variety of modeling tools that support it.  BPMN looks a bit like traditional swimlane diagrams, but adds powerful new features that allow exception handling – the hidden cost of real-world business processes – to be modeled explicitly in the diagram.

This course shows you how to use BPMN to document existing processes, propose new and improved processes, and quantify the expected benefits of those improvements using simulation analysis.  We will discuss using BPMN at three different levels for distinct purposes: Level 1 for basic documentation and discussion; Level 2 for simulation analysis and detailed specification; and Level 3 as a front end for executable implementation.  The major focus on the training will be Level 2.

BPMN itself provides no standard methodology, but the training will provide a best practices approach to “top-down” process modeling using BPMN subprocesses, including basic principles that will help you determine the boundaries of a single subprocess or task.

You will also learn the complete set of BPMN elements, including all the various types of gateways and events, but we will focus on a manageable core working set that greatly simplifies the learning process, without sacrificing descriptive power.  These include intermediate events, the key difference between BPMN and traditional flowcharting.  You will not only learn how to use them correctly, but why they are critical to analyzing process performance… and how to do that as well.  You will learn best practices for using all the BPMN elements to maximize understanding by untrained users, without losing the precise semantics required for simulation analysis.  While simulation analysis is not standardized by BPMN, it is a feature of most process modeling tools, and we will demonstrate how to use it effectively to optimize your process model.

The two-day course includes use of Process Modeler for Visio, a BPMN modeling and simulation tool from ITP Commerce that works on top of Microsoft Visio 2003 or 2007. Hands-on exercises are essential to develop understanding of BPMN concepts. Each student is expected to bring a laptop to the class and will use it to complete exercises using the tool. In addition to a Certificate of Training through BPMInstitute.org, students who satisfactorily complete all the exercises are eligible for certification of proficiency in BPMN modeling from BPMessentials.com. Price of the course includes 30-day license to the Process Modeler tool, which is an add-in to Microsoft Visio. A free trial  version of Microsoft Visio 2007 is available to students who do not have Visio available on their laptop.

    Course Outline:

    • What is Process Modeling?
    • BPMN Background
    • The Basics: Activities, Gateways, and Events
    • Subprocesses and Top-Down Methodology
    • The Complete Notation and a Practical Working Set
    • Exception Handling With Events
    • Model Optimization Using Simulation Analysis

    Course Objectives:

    • Understand the 3 different levels of modeling possible with BPMN
    • Understand a best practices methodology for translating process knowledge into BPMN
    • Understand the rules and best practices for all BPMN elements, and which elements constitute a practical working set.
    • Learn how to use intermediate events to model exception handling.
    • Understand how to apply simulation parameters to the diagram to project process performance.

    Instructor Biography:

Dr Silver is an independent industry analyst and consultant specializing in BPM tools and technology.  He provides licensable and customizable training on Process Modeling With BPMN.  In addition, he provides extensive reports and commentary on BPM Suites, including the 2007 BPMS Report series available on the BPM Institute website, and the BPMS Watch blog (www.brsilver.com/wordpress).  In addition, he writes the monthly BPMS Watch column on bpminstitute.org and the Change Agent column for Intelligent Enterprise magazine. He was formerly vice president and service director at BIS Strategic Decisions, which became Giga Information Group (now part of Forrester Research).
