In the "BA Strategy and Value" discussion elsewhere in the Business Architecture forum, this topic has arisen repeatedly. Reference has been made in one instance, as follows: "There is a vast body of knowledge that reaches across many of the white papers, OMG postings, and training material that is being delivered."
On the one hand, it's fair to say that this is exciting, because this news suggests that innovative thinking is being created and preserved that will forward the notion that business will benefit increasingly from the practice of Business Architecture.
On the other hand, the reality of relative inaccessibility to this knowledge base by some members of this forum suggests that there are policies in place that might actually be inhibiting the advancement of this worthy profession.
A couple of kickoff questions for this new discussion: Is there general agreement that access by members of this forum to "OMG white papers and postings" might, in the end, accelerate BA being better positioned to improve business? If so, is there any insurmountable barrier to that information being regularly exported from the BASIG database, and imported into the our wiki that is part this forum?

There are several subgroups of the Business Architecture Special Interest Group (BASIG) at the OMG, working on different parts of the agenda William Ulrich laid out in an earlier post. I am working in one of these subgroups that seeks to create a vocabulary of Business Architecture and then link this vocabulary to some existing OMG standards. There is a parallel effort in ISO that one of my colleagues is involved in. I see no reason why the materials that we develop and review in the BASIG cannot be made available to members of this forum. Working papers and position papers and reference works that are not subject to copyright can be made available via the BASIG website, bawg.omg.org, provided that their authors and the author's sponsoring company agree to this. I would be reluctant to duplicate those materials on the BAI Wiki, for the simple reason that it is extra work and there will be errors. There are other OMG documents, such as Submissions to OMG RFPs, that are restricted to OMG membership. We would not be able to make those accessible to non-members. The motivation for us to provide this service is to engage others in the formulation and organization of this body of knowledge. We are very willing to try this out, but continuation will depend on good feedback and contributions. The BAI Wiki would be best used for topics that would be considered out of scope for the BASIG or that are of current interest to this community, but not under the current work effort of the BASIG.
